Citizens For A Better America

The aptly named group Citizens for a Better America is doing work that I support wholeheartedly. Check them out here. They speak, I believe, for the vast majority of Americans.

Weather Underground

Forget the Yahoo weather site, which is really just the Weather Channel's site, which sucks. The most comprehensive internet source for all your weather related needs is Weather Underground, which I have just bookmarked under my "references" tab. It has complete and searchable almanac information too, for you global warming junkies.

No, I'm not a total geek. But I am the daughter of a former Navy Aerographer's Mate.

On a slightly related note, I want you all to know my electrical usage has decreased compared to last year's kWh for two months in a row! And I haven't even been trying. Of course that might be because last year I tended to forget to turn off the air when leaving the house. Now, I have a Puerto Rican butler who will do that for me.

Coolest Thing On The Internets Of The Day: The Met's Zoom Function

Here's something I hadn't seen before. It's a very cool zoom function at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's website. I linked to Poussin's The Abduction of the Sabine Women, because there's a lot going on in there. But you can find and zoom in on pretty much everything they have at the Met. It's my favorite museum.

Also, while we're on the subject of art, click on the extended entry if you're interested in a tour of the National Gallery's Jasper Johns exhibition. I thought it was interesting. more...

Modern Liberalism Explained

Two weekends ago I turned you on to a fabulous 75 minute YouTube on global warming. This weekend, I only need you to set aside 48 minutes.

This speech, by a guy named Evan Sayet, is pure brilliance. I don't know why I've never heard of him before. For years I've been looking for a "grand unified theory" of why liberals are so fucked up, and this dude came up with a real contender. He presents his thesis within the first couple of minutes, and when I heard it I was like, "whoa, that's amazing, I've never thought of it like that before."

h/t to Shelly and Rodger.

YouTube Of The Day

This is Tom Jones. Enjoy!

I actually saw Tom Jones in Vegas once. I went as a joke, but came out a believer. The man puts on a fantastic show! We got seated at a table in the front row too. I was so close I could see the spit and sweat flying. We got such great seats due to a tricky move by my boyfriend at the time. As we stood in line he kept a twenty clutched in his hand so the usher could see it. Then while the guy led us down front, my boyfriend palmed the twenty and handed him a five. I'm sure the usher was pissed, but what the hell. Oh by the way, chicks really did throw underwear up on stage for Tom to wipe his sweat with. I thought that was just an icky legend, but it's true. I managed to stay fully clothed though.

Old Celebrities

What the stars will look like when they get old.

Especially check out Tom Cruise, George Clooney and Angelina. David Schwimmer is hilariously grotesque.

And I think somebody mistakenly included a picture of Nick Cage as he looks today.

Coolest Shoe Shopping Site

Girls, check out the search functions on this shoe shopping site: Endless.com. They let you search by style, brand, color, size, width and price all at the same time. I'm not a big fan of buying shoes without trying them on, but free overnight shipping? You've gotta be kidding me. I love the cool magnification tool too.

C.T.O.T.I.O.T.D.

Tony Joe White is a southern blues/rock singer who is pretty much known for only one song. It's a cool song, and the album it's taken from, Black and White fuckin' rocks and I highly recommend it should you see it somewhere--you won't be disappointed.

The fact the young Tony Joe White resembles a rather young Joe Don Baker doesn't influence me at all. Really. (I should mention that these days, TJW resembles Don Imus, while JDB resembles the Sta-Puft Marshmallow Man, just in case you were wondering.)

In this YouTube video, he and Johnny Cash perform Poke Salad Annie. You won't regret clicking on the PLAY button.

By contrast, I offer one of the Cr.T.O.T.I.O.T.D. (Crappiest Thing on the Internets of the Day) for your viewing--whatever. In this clip from Soul Train, Joe Tex has a bad experience on the dance floor. Enjoy the disco ball, funky dancing, bad lip-synching, and massive amounts of polyester...or don't.

C.T.O.T.I.O.T.D.

Once upon a time, Betty Boop and Cab Calloway performed together.

Minnie the Moocher was filmed in 1932, before the Production Code of 1934 forced Betty to give up her short skirt & garter and change into a knee-length dress with a back (and, presumably, a bra). As you might imagine, the Code was Betty's death knell. Sex sold, even in cartoons from the 1930's.

This cartoon opens with the earliest known footage of Cab Calloway and his Orchestra performing a one-minute introduction to Minnie the Moocher. The plot of the cartoon is pretty simple: Betty decides she hates her parents and runs away with a friend, then she gets the bejeebers scared out of her and she returns home. Simple, eh?

Yeah, but one wonders where Max Fleisher got some of his ideas. Calloway appears before Betty and Bimbo in a puff of smoke as a rotoscoped walrus and conjures up visions of ghosts & skeletons while singing about drug use & having a sugar daddy in front of a constantly changing background. The demons & witch that scare Betty home seem almost tame by comparison.

Cab Calloway went on to make two other Betty Boop cartoons: The Old Man of the Mountain in 1933 (which also features a one-minute long live-action introduction by Cab Calloway and his Orchestra performing the title song) and Snow White, also in 1933, four years before the Disney version. Alas, there is no live-action footage of Cab Calloway performing the featured song, St. James Infirmary Blues, although he does appear as a rotoscoped Koko the Clown.

If you have some extra time, check out those two cartoons. In them Max Fleisher comes up with some of the most original and clever visual stunts and situations ever commited to film...and, yeah, the Production Code of 1934 killed those, too.

Single White TOS-TNG-DS9 Fan Looking For Par'Machi

Have you heard about the Star Trek fans' internet dating site, Trek Passions?

It was after a wildly unsuccessful run with Esquire.com Personals, a paid service affiliated with the men's magazine, that "S" (he asked that his name not be used) sought out Trek Passions. The final straw came when he was rejected by a woman with whom he had nothing in common. "She was the complete and total opposite of me in every way," he confesses. When the self-proclaimed "Spock-like personality" turned out not to be "fashionably ironic," she was disappointed. (He doesn't think his day job as a janitor helped his cause any.)

"S" says that he's been told: "Weird people should date other weird people - the normals don't quite understand."

Here's a typical intro from the site, by a 31 year old male seeking female:
Your basic Spock-like personality here, seeking a woman with a personality somewhere in the Deanna Troi to Subcommander T'Pol range. will consider B'Elana Torres to Kira Nerys types depending on extenuating circumstances. No tribbles, please.
Here's another one from an average carbon-based life-form:
I've been in way too many relationships where the girl I'm with thinks "He's great, except for that Sci-Fi fascination" . . . I'm so done with that, and just looking for someone who can enjoy an hour of Trek with me instead of in the other room.
Lol, good luck with that, dude.

This one's short and to the point:

Take me to your bedroom, earthling. I live ST:OS, ST:TNG, BSG and BDSM.
Bwahaha! I'm not sure I'm familiar with the acronym for that last tv show, though.

Now, I know some of my readers have probably already opened up another window and are feverishly typing their intros as we speak. On the other hand, some of you geeks might be skeptical, like Conan O'Brien was:

Trek Passions received a boost back in March, when, on his late-night talk show, Conan O'Brien quipped: "The fans say the dating website is going great and any month now they hope a girl will join."
Funny, but I did check and yes, there are a few girls on the site. Here's a choice one:
My pictureÂ’s a stretched horizontally; IÂ’m not nearly that wide in real life, jeez. Just bought STNG 1 and 3 collectorÂ’s on DVD. . . . I like characters and episodes more than series, although STNG and Voyager have the best decorating, I mean, where would you rather be quartered; on PicardÂ’s Enterprise or KirkÂ’s? . . . To sum up my personality lets just say that if there were Hobbits in the Trek series I would identify strongly and have the same values. I also probably look and act like one, except IÂ’m bigger.
Now, I also know curious blog readers are thinking, "hey, Annika's got TNG Season's one to three on DVD, and she's been known to sprinkle lines from The Prisoner into her blog posts."

Well, stop wondering. Even if I didn't have a boyfriend already, you wouldn't catch me posting my Janeway inspired picture on the internet, trolling for über-nerds in some cyberspace version of the Mos Eisley Cantina.

I would simply wait until the next Creation convention, hang out by the comic tables, and bat my eyelashes like one of Mudd's Women.
