I just discovered a mildly interesting new time-waster. Just when I need it most, at the start of finals.
It's called Yahoo! Answers. Okay, help me out here. One question posed by a member of the Yahoo! teeming millions is "Why do so many liberals drive imported cars?" I posted my answer, can you find it? And do you have your own theories to add?

I had trouble finding your answer but after reading and re-reading them all I decided it was the snarky irrelevant one. Boy was I surprised to see I was right when I finally noticed that sappy little drawing.
The responders pretty well summed it up. Only republicans pose such petty, argumentative and pointless questions. Why are the blue staters more cosmopolitan, better educated, consumers of dentistry, eschewers of filial sex and drivers of imports? Maybe its because they are too smart to consider jingoistic crap like "Buy American" relevant. Americans buy cars they like and rarely if ever make it a matter of politics. Although I have a cousin who with her wife decided to support union workers and bought a plastic Saturn. What a piece of shit. Although that is a real issue; union v. non union labor; corporate profits are meaningless. So all those liberals you saw driving "imports" were expressing a different kind of hypocrisy. Of course they were driving better built cars than the W stickered folks and getting better gas mileage too.

I'm an independent, but I bought a Honda Insight in 2000 because I was concerned about America's addition to oil (still am). The Big 3 did not make a fuel efficient car anywhere near comparable. Last year in May, we traded in the Saturn SW1 station wagon for a 2005 Prius, again because Detroit did not produce what we felt was appropriate to mitigate the fuel crunch crisis.
It will likely be a few more years before Detroit comes around; they made the choice themselves, even asking Bush to kill the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles program, where they had produced prototypes of family cars that achieved over 70 mpg. But they wouldn't make as high a profit margin as SUVs, so the Big 3 continued their role as pushers for the growing ranks of addicts. Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham said Monday, April 9, 2001 that seven years into the PNGV partnership, its ``direction is inconsistent with where the market is headed and where the automakers are headed.''
Does anyone wonder why we have high oil prices? Blaming it on the chinese would be pitifully sad denial.

I was right across the bay in North Park yesterday, aka Lezzie country. I was not disappointed. Many Kerry stickers were spotted, but not a single dubyah sticker. Lest you think this a measure of American attitudes. There are no REAL veterans in that neighborhood.

Just for balance, I should say that I will never buy an American car for one simple reason. I've never been in one that didn't suck compared to Japanese cars. However, that's not an anti-American thing, I'd love to support American products -- my dad is from Detroit -- but not at the expense of my own peace of mind. I would never buy a Hyundai either. And German cars are cool, but they break down much more than I think is acceptable. So really, there is another reason that the jobless liberal with all them bumper stickers drives the crappy Sentra from the mid 80's. No American cars from that era are still on the road!

Simple answer: they are not. Rep voters are, on average, both better educated and, of course, wealthier than Dem voters. Just because 15 liberals cram themselves into an over-priced apartment in SF doesn't make them more cosompolitan - just makes them collectively more stupid.

Just got in,a little out of breath I was in the back yard running those ribbons around the pole with all the neighbor kids in their red bandanas. We sang some songs, "Joe Hill", "The four Insurgent Generals, the "International" and a few others. Nice day. Tonight we'll screen "Potemkin" and in the morning have our teeth done at the free clinic; the better to eschew capitalism.

Although your attempt at humor was weak - I am, after all, an urban dweller and have never seen the inside of a trailer - it did have a positive effect. It reminded me of a really fucking amazing X-Files episode. It was called "Home" and dealt with inbreeding and incest. In fact, I'm pretty sure all the hub-bub helped lead to the V-Chip thing in Congress.
So, even in your comedic lameness, Straw, you managed to add to the Annika Journal experience. It's good to have a commie on staff just so everybody can see what things could be like if the good guys don't win.

Although I was reared on Sci-fi I could never get into the X-Files. Too slow moving and moody. To metaphysical and spooky rather than Asimovian which was more my cup of tea.
When you say urban are we talking 4 digit or 5 digit population? Never saw the inside of a trailer eh? Is that cause the rich kids moms wouldn't let you play with their little precious'?

Oh man. "Home" rocked. Nothing like inbred hulks having kids with their mom and beating the living shit (literally) out of innocent townsfolk. Such appropriate background music, too. I heard they pulled that episode in a bunch of markets, and some unfortunate locals didn't get to watch it, no? It's one of the episodes that makes it worth it to buy the DVDs.

Yep, Blu is a resident of that island of blue in an island of red in an island of blue, known as Sacramento. Lots of liberals here, surrounded by the trailer park meth heaven known as the San Joaquin valley. Interestingly, there are no good Mexican restaurants or delis in town, or maybe Blu could enlighten me. People keep saying Vallejo's is good, but besides the mariachi music on weekends (i adore mariachi music) the food sux. For deli food, I have to wait until my monthly trip to LA or a very occasional visit to NYC for that.
Oh Straw, I could never get into X-files either, for the same reason.

Yup, I don't think FOX ever replayed it. However, a few years ago, TNT (I think) went through the entire series from start to finish and replayed "Home." They had a disclaimer before the episode saying basically that the viewer better get prepared for some twisted shit and that the episode had caused a lot of controversey and had never been re-broadcast.
Embrace your nerdy sci-fi self. It's cool not to be cool :-)

"You're killing me, Smalls." No good Mexican food?! There is a lot of it, girl. My personal favorite is Tres Hermanas on K between 24th and 25th - best salsa in town if can handle HOT. (In fact, I'll be there this Friday celebrating Cinco de Mayo with my hispanic brothers and sisters.) And there also happens to be a pretty cool deli about a block away called "Beach Hut Deli" on J between 24th and 25th. There is a ton of good food in mid-town and downtown. I'll send you some suggestions off-line.
