Compliance Update
For safety reasons i have regularly monitored the actuation readings of this blog on a semi-periodic basis. Up until now, i have done this without telling anyone, because i didn't want to alarm you.
Now, with the new federal regulations set to kick in at the beginning of next year, i've decided to make the semi-periodic actuation readings public. i feel it's always better for my visitors to know, rather than to not know. And i am proud to say that this is the first blog in the history of the blogosphere to comply in advance with the upcoming, more stringent federal guidelines as enumerated at Title 51, vol. 3, ch. XVIII, parts 751 to 782, subparts S through T, inclusive.
i hope that by providing this information to you, i have put at least some of your minds at ease. Feel free to contact me with any concerns you might have, but at this time i'd like to remind everyone that to date there has been no credible study linking blog actuation levels to any serious health risk. However, i'm sure you will agree that it never hurts to be safe and informed. That's part of my commitment to you, dear visitor, to keep you safe and/or informed.
Carry on.

The AP already has a "story" out on the wires about how the Third World is "disapointed" with the selection. In keeping with the AP's rigorous journalistic standards, the reporter went out and found a couple of people who would have prefered a person from Latin America or Africa and then ran the story as if there was some sort of general disconent. The MSM just really sucks....
If you want to see somebody really pissing his pants over the selection, go check out Andrew Sullivan's site......was he expecting a pro-gay Pope?!

Asked for his thoughts on the selection of the new Pope, the Rev. Thomas Reese, Editor of The Jesuit weekly (America) responded: "He could be a wedge rether than a uniter for the church." Well, I'm not a catholic, but it seems to me that after 2000 years of established church doctrin, it is the liberal Catholics who are the wedge. They might consider a church split. Then then they could select their own Pope, say.. John Kerry, or maybe his wife Theresa.

Completely Lame Robot Mailbag Post
annika's journal gets mail, and Robot Week is no exception. To: Annika
From: Leonard Nimoy
Subject: Robots
Dear Annika,
I was reading through your blog from beginning to end, and I noticed this Robot related post from last March. In it you incorrectly refer to Iron Man as a colossal death robot.
Allow me to point out that Iron Man, while colossal and deadly, was not a robot at all. A key fact, which you seem to have quite forgotten, is that Iron Man "was turned to steel in a great magnetic field."
Logic therefore dictates that Iron Man was at one time a carbon-based life form, and at no time was he a mechanical device, which by definition all robots are.
Please correct this error.
Sorry, Mr. Nimoy. If that is your real name. It's too late to correct that entry, so you can just kiss my ass.
Iron Man? Gimme a break. "Why should we even care?"

It could be argued that carbon-based biology is merely a very complicated mechanism, albeit more immediately prey to the chaos which seems to be inherent in all so-called "life". In which case, perhaps the degree of life in a certain thing should be measured not by the complexity of its mechanism, but by its victimization at the hands of chaos. Or, carrying the thought further, perhaps we are only alive to whatever extent we embrace chaos.
By belittling robots, Mr. Nimoy, you belittle not only myself (I can take it, for my skin is Iron) but the beautiful unpredictability of life as a whole.
On behalf of the universe, I await your apology.
Yes, I'm a robot, but I'm more alive than you'll ever be. I am chaos and love.

Nimoy is right. What is steel made of? Iron and carbon. Iron Man must have been carbon based at one time.

Ooops. Ignore that superfluous and grammatically incorrect "make."

Oh, and Annie: If you scroll down to the bottom of that Reese's link I posted, you'll discover that, "Recently, the company introduced popular limited edition items including White Chocolate (now a permanent item),
Dark Chocolate, INSIDE OUT and BIG CUP peanut butter cups." See
here.
No word on whether they're still in production.

Matt, the singular versus plural for a company with a plural or posessive name isn't necessarily grammatically incorrect: just British rather than American forms for collective entities (e.g., "the Administration is" versus "the Government are").

Although using BOTH singular and plural forms at the same time is, of course, as you noted, superfluous.
Moreover, does my saying that white chocolate is disgusting imply that I thought there weren't white chocolate Reese's cups? I wouldn't think so.

"the singular versus plural for a company with a plural or posessive name isn't necessarily grammatically incorrect"
Thanks for the heads-up; I wouldn't have picked up on the Brit angle. However, since I tend toward linguistic descriptivism, and speak American English, I still prefer the plural. (Perhaps we Americans take the concept of corporate personality a bit more seriously than the Brits.)
"does my saying that white chocolate is disgusting imply that I thought there weren't white chocolate Reese's cups?"
No. I inferred it from the fact that you didn't mention that there
are white chocolate Reese's cups, which seemed a natural thing to mention at that juncture, if you knew.
Did you know?

Folks,
I'm in the business. Trust me, Reese's (Hershey) does make Reese's Dark Chocolate PB Cup.
You'll probably find the product in your favorite convenience store.
I can tell you this--they are available here in the Midwest.
To you marketing aficionados, dark chocolate is the only segment of the the chocolate biz that's experiencing double digit growth.
Can you say brand extension?
Hence, the dark chocolate product.

They made it two years ago when they introduced white chocolate. Open your eyes. They were limited edition and by far the best kind out there. Typically they chose to continue the lesser of the two...white chocolate. Yeah, apparently people like Maroon 5, too.

The first order of business, i would imagine, will be teaching the president how to pronounce "nuclear."

SNL had a "commercial" for laser tat removal on recently. It was advertising for women to get their back tats removed. In a demo, it showed a nice sexy back with the tatoo "Sexy Lady". They then demonstrated what happens as the skins ages and droops. The Sexy Lady morphed into "Just Sad". It was pretty good yuks.

Lame Or Genius Idea?
Over at
Paul's a commenter named
EEKer posted the following comment, and i can't decide whether it's a lame idea or a genius idea.
Years ago I was able to convince my wife that it would be really romantic to switch off for Valentines every year. One year she is the Valentine and the next I am. This was a good move. She ate it up and loves the idea. Now I'm off the hook at least every other year. This year I'm coasting!
i guess it depends on how long the relationship has been around. It would probably be a bad idea to suggest trading off years when you're still dating. But after a few years of marriage, i could see the idea having its advantages.

lame idea. he may be "off the hook" this year but what does that mean? Shes no ones valentine that year? It sounds a tad self centered on a day which should be a celebration of love not whos "off the hook" this time. If I loved someone enough to marry them they would be my valentine every year. Call me corny, I dont care.
